Your dog also needs fat in his diet for an energy source. Fat is also a way that the body uses fat-soluble vitamins and important fatty acids like Omega-3 and Omega-6. Look for foods that have sources of fat called “chicken fat” and “salmon oil.” Avoid generic fats like “animal fat.”
Carbohydrates
Contrary to what some people think, carbohydrates are not bad for your dog. Dogs are able to digest starches quite well, unlike cats. What you should avoid is the presence of too many carbohydrates in your dog’s food. Some kibbles are 40 percent or more – we’ve seen foods with 50 percent or more – carbohydrates. In these cases, much of the carbohydrates are filling ingredients and empty calories. Those are the foods you should not feed. With a little effort, you can find low to moderate carbohydrate dog food. Some carbohydrates are beneficial for your Yorkipoo. For example, carbohydrates help your dog feel full so that he doesn’t feel hungry again immediately after a meal. Dietary fiber is a carbohydrate. Dietary fiber includes chicory, oats, barley, beet pulp, and other ingredients that are good for your dog’s digestion. If you want to feed your Yorkipoo a very low carbohydrate dog food, we suggest looking for canned or wet food. Many of these foods have low percentages of carbohydrates or even no carbohydrates at all.
